Hiccups

Repeated and involuntary spasmodic contractions of the diaphragm muscle with abrupt and sonorous closures of the glottis. Often occurs after a meal that is too hot, too cold, too large, too watered, poorly combined or absorbed too quickly.

Chronic hiccups are an indicator of a pathology most often linked to the esophagus. The causes of prolonged or recurrent attacks can be:

• swallowing hot or irritating substances
• pneumonia
• renal failure
• esophageal, biliary or pancreatic disease

Unpasteurized miso

Gomasio (repeat every 20 minutes)

Cal-Mag (Quest) 100 mg, 2 tabs. after meals

Suck a whole grain sugar cube washed down with a few drops of unpasteurized cider vinegar

Swallow crushed ice or suck an ice cube

Eat dry bread

Eliminate carbonated drinks, alcohol

Drink several small sips of very hot or very cold water and inhale deeply with each swallowed sip

Swallow a very bitter food (bitterness helps stop the spasm)

Eat without speaking and chew well

Produce sneezing with the use of a nasal stylus (See Nasosympathicotherapy / Biotherapies) or breathe pepper

Place ice cubes on the Adam's apple

Gargle with cold water

Compress the diaphragm by bringing the legs up against the stomach and leaning forward to "curl up into a ball".
