Uterine Fibroid

Benign tumor that is not very painful, developed at the expense of the uterine muscle (fibromatous core) and closely linked to hormonal functioning.

May bleed at the time of or during menstruation. Excess folliculin.

Often causes pollakiuria (frequent urge to urinate), deformation or swelling of the lower abdomen, incontinence (inability to hold urine), constipation (when the fibroid compresses the large intestine or rectum) - Nearly 20% of women aged 40 have a uterine fibroid.

• <b>fibroma intramural</b>: forms inside the wall of the uterus between the layers of muscles.
• <b>subserosal fibroid</b>: grows towards the outside of the uterus.
• <b>submucosal fibroid</b>: develops just below the surface of the mucosa.
